With just one lane of traffic traveling in each direction, Highway 9 is a 35-mile long road that winds through the Santa Cruz Mountains between the town of Los Gatos and the city of Santa Cruz. It serves as a vital route for commuters traveling to and from coastal communities and Silicon Valley. Landslides are a frequent hazard on the Highway, especially during wet winter storms. In March 2008, McGuire and Hester was called by CalTrans to perform emergency storm damage repair to prevent further erosion on an existing slope that provided crucial support to the Highway. After carefully removing eroded soil, our team worked through the night to install a rip-rap keyway to rebuild the slope, placed utilities and performed open-grade paving to repair the road – all without closing down the Highway.
