The Cities of San Leandro and Oakland both had a vested interest in redesigning Doolittle Drive, a major access road to Oakland International Airport. Initially a wide boulevard where vehicles traveled at a high rate of speed, the goal of this project was to create a narrower, more inviting street with landscaped median islands and new landscaping on the shoulder. McGuire and Hester was contracted for Phases I and II, to install the new medians as well as curbs, gutters and sidewalks for this two-mile long stretch of road in both San Leandro and Oakland. Doolittle Drive is a Caltrans right-of-way, so multi-agency approvals and inspections were required prior to work start and during construction. Constant traffic made this a challenging job to complete. As part of the project, McGuire and Hester installed two very large concrete city entrance monuments at the border between San Leandro and Oakland.
