Fueling the Skies

This endeavor involved the construction of two new 89,500-barrel gross capacity (66,000-barrel usable capacity) tanks, namely JFT-4 and JFT-5, at the San Francisco International Airport Jet Fuel Storage Facility. These tanks were equipped with suction and fill piping, a sump separator for daily water pumping, automatic tank gauging, stairs, lighting, and two tank-mounted fire protection foam chambers.

The installation process featured concrete pile caps, each supported by 130 feet deep torque-down piles, ensuring a robust foundation for the tanks. Additionally, pipe and cable tray supports were constructed on piles, enhancing the overall structural integrity of the project. This project encountered significant permitting challenges, with SFO requiring a geotechnical and structural peer review due to the sensitive nature and importance of the project. Despite these challenges, construction permits were successfully obtained on a just-in-time basis, facilitating the timely commencement of construction activities.
